What Is Swiss CNC Machining?

Swiss CNC machining is a specialized process to machine small, high precision turned parts. A Swiss CNC machine, also referred to as a Swiss automatic lathe, Swiss screw machine, or Swiss-type lathe, was originally designed for the Swiss watchmaking industry. Over the years, the Swiss-style turning machine has been refined to be widely used in various industries for high-volume, high-precision manufacturing – and for good reason.

A Swiss-style lathe is a type of machine that cuts bar stock fed through a guide bushing while the tools keep stationary. The collet is recessed behind the guide bushing so that the bar stock held in it will have better support and will not directly be exposed to the lathe bed and the tooling, so the machine can process the material rapidly and tightly. Also, it plays a great role in decreasing tool deflection and vibration while increasing parts accuracy since the cutting tool can work nearer to the bushing.

How Does A Swiss-type Lathe Work?

A conventional turning machine has a fixed headstock that holds the spinning workpiece when a cutting tool moves across to machine the outer diameter. However, in a Swiss CNC turning center, it employs a sliding headstock that feeds bar stock through a guide bushing in the Z-axis towards the stationary cutting tool.

In the turning operation, clamped onto the chuck or collet in the headstock, the bar stock is located radially and precisely. The headstock moves back and forth along the z-axis, taking the bar stock with it. The turning tools, carried on the gang slide, always engage the bar stock close to the bushing, usually within 1 to 3 mm, thus providing the greatest degree of support and decreasing vibration and tool deflection consequently. And continuous feeding is achieved by the movement of the spindle and the supply of the guide bush.

Compared with a conventional lathe with fixed headstocks where the workpiece is clamped in a chuck or collet and extends to the enclosure of the machine as a cantilever or can be supported on the one end with a tailstock, the Swiss CNC turning machine has movable headstocks.

In conventional turning, the workpiece is stabilized in the chuck of the main spindle, which tends to cause the part to deflect from tool pressure when the ratio of length to diameter gets beyond 4:1.

While during Swiss machining, the workpiece is clamped in a collet that can slide along the headstock behind the guide bushing, allowing the cutting tool to operate near the guide bushing. Such mechanical configuration eliminates deflections when machining, so when producing precise parts with desired tolerances, Swiss CNC turning can come into play, despite the length of the workpiece.

Modern Swiss-type lathes function 5-axis control or more axes and can run multiple operations on the part in a single machining cycle, such as drilling, slotting, thread cutting, end-face grooving, milling, cut-off, and back drilling in a single run.

In comparison, conventional lathes usually feature 3 or 4 axes and are not able to complete machining a part in a single cycle. Due to that, some mildly complex parts may need machining on multiple machines, drastically increasing cycle time and decreasing precision.

Swiss-type CNC machines use oil as a coolant liquid rather than water. The benefits of the use of oil are shown in many aspects, including the greater lubricity, free from the prune-like hands owing to exposure to water-based coolant all day, and from odor-causing bacteria growth.

However, compared to water, the main shortcoming of oil is less effective at dissipating heat. Therefore, it is prudent to equip the machine with a fire-suppression system.

On Swiss CNC turning, the Z-axis motion comes from the moving of the stock instead of the tool. This change affects the nature of programming offsets. For turning longer length or drilling deeper holes, the Swiss-type machine entails a “plus” offset, while the conventional lathes require a “minus” offset.

On conventional lathes, turning is done procedurally as roughing pass, finishing pass then, then machining of features such as OD grooves or threads to complete the part.

As for Swiss CNC turning, due to the length of the guide bushing, machining in segments has to be done to guarantee the final part dimensions are within the desired tolerances. Its machining sequence might go: OD turn up to the location of a groove, machine that groove, bring back the previous tool to resume OD turning, and so on.
